ETC Youth LEAD Program Manager
Organization Description: Environmental Traveling Companions (ETC) opens the beauty and challenge of wilderness adventures to everyone, regardless of physical or financial limitations. Every year, over 2,000 people with special needs join ETC to raft whitewater rivers, ski across alpine meadows, and sea kayak the waters of San Francisco Bay.
Program Description: ETCs Youth LEAD Program (YLP) trains diverse groups of high school students (14-18) to develop leadership, environmental awareness, interpersonal communication and outdoor skills. YLP 12 to 24-day courses include: ropes course, sea kayaking on the San Francisco Bay, whitewater rafting on the South Fork of the American River, expedition backpacking in the Sierra, disability/diversity awareness, and organic farm service project. Program includes further development of a pilot mentorship and fellowship program, giving students the opportunities to put their skills into action.
Position: Full-time with possible unpaid month leave. Now accepting applications. Position is open until filled.
Responsibilities:
Coordinate the overall management and evaluation of Youth LEAD Program
Collaborate with Summer Search, schools, and agencies for student recruitment.
Conduct student interviews and select and prepare students for the course
Manage course staff including co-leader, interns and volunteers
Complete Curriculum development including following components:
Outdoor leadership and technical skills; watershed ecology; farm component;
disability and diversity awareness training; journal; council
Facilitate School Logistics
Collaborate with program coordinators for school logistics; plan and purchase food; oversee school presentations for parents and community; monitor budget
Evaluate all aspect of the program including:
Pre/post assessment tool: student and instructor evaluations and final report
Follow-up with program managers to facilitate students further involvement
Create manual for program management
Further develop and implement a pilot mentorship and fellowship program.
Qualifications:
Ideal candidate has program management experience.
Experience with curriculum development.
Current Wilderness First Responder or EMT and CPR certification
Past experience leading wilderness courses & environmental education programs.
Must have experience working with diverse groups of inner-city adolescents
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Rafting: experience guiding class III rivers for at least two seasons *
Sea Kayaking: Experience as a sea kayak instructor, ideally on SF Bay *
Backpacking: Leading groups on multi-day backpacking trips *
* Applicant should be qualified in at least 2 of the 3 above adventure skill areas
