On any given day there are 7.3 million children who have a parent in prison or under state or federal supervision. Without meaningful intervention, 70 percent of these children will become incarcerated themselves.(Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2003)
There are approximately 200,000 children in California whose parents are in prison, with over 5,280 children of prisoners residing in Alameda County, California!
What is being done about this issue:
OreMi (meaning “my friend, mentor, and someone in whom I can confide”—Yoruba)
The OreMi Mentoring Program is a preventative and strength-based mentoring project for children, ages 4-14, living in Alameda County who have a parent in the state or federal prison system. This is a collaborative effort between Family Support Services of the Bay Area and Big Brothers Big Sisters of the East Bay. These agencies have joined together to share their expertise in serving families facing a variety of life challenges, including parental incarceration. The OreMi Mentoring Program seeks to break the intergenerational cycle of crime and incarceration by providing youth with one-to-one mentors, enriching group activities, and by offering the youth and his/her family linkages to community resources.
