REFERENCES
I worked for Stanford's Undergraduate Advising Center (UAC) as a math tutor for 4 years. Students responded to an anonymous survey where they were asked to comment on their tutoring experience with me. Below are a few selections, edited only for spelling. Email me if you want to see the full unedited survey. Because the survey was anonymous, I don't know which students said which things, but I am happy to provide email addresses of current and former students of mine.
"I enjoyed how he facilitated my own working through the problem, rather than just telling me how to do it. He was very patient to work with me in a way that did not cause stress, even with my nonmath skills."
"Very knowledgeable about math and was very thorough in helping with problems and explaining information."
"Frank is an amazing tutor, not only does he help you conceptualize the math that you're dealing with by coming up with real examples but he, a double major in math and psych, boosts your confidence in yourself that you can do it. He does this absolutely selflessly and often came down to the lounge to help out even during his off-hours. Though UAC tutors are not required to, he always had time for a quick question during the day and was never cross or unhelpful. Frank is generally a great guy, but as a tutor he goes beyond the academic to help students both learn the material as well as how to learn the material."
"He would be careful not to give us the answer, but guide us towards a solution; i.e. we would always do the work ourselves so we could learn it better."
"He was very patient and very encouraging. Though he must have been impatient on the inside, there was nothing noticeable about this. His teaching method is very constructive in that he never reveals an answer immediately, instead making the student explain him or herself first and then clarifying the weaknesses in the explanation as they come along. By doing this, Frank, again, teaches the student that they are not as unknowledgeable as they may believe, that they can teach themselves and then finally what the gaps in the explanation were."
"This sounds impossible but I can not imagine a better tutor than Frank. I would have passed my math class without him, but I really understand the material now, the only thing that I am unhappy with is the fact that I only came to his tutoring once a week and that I will not be taking math classes that he could assist me with."
"I was very pleased with the help I received. Usually students have questions about the material related to the problem sets, but I had a 'theoretical' question concerning the difference between mean and median. Frank tried many different examples in various forms (graphs, histogram, number line) to illustrate the difference. This was extremely helpful!!"
"Frank is one of the best 'teachers' I have had. He is able to explain all the material in a manner in which it is easily understandable. His methods are to teach by allowing us to work out problems ourselves with guidance when we need it. Frank is extremely helpful and is a big part of why I plan on continuing in Math."
"Frank was extremely professional and strongly encouraged critical thinking and working through problems. He was also good at selecting exercises that would help to improve understanding of the material. I highly recommend Frank to any student looking for a tutor in Math or a related course."
"In case it's not clear enough, the message is: hire more tutors like Frank. Tutors are extremely helpful to students BUT only if they do not intimidate students or appear standoffish. Investing the time in finding more tutors with Frank's characteristic would lead to a large pay-off for students in the end."
PAYMENT
I am offering the first two one-hour sessions as a trial period: absolutely free. I am willing to come to your house or we can choose to meet somewhere else near you, such as a library or a coffee shop.
After the trial period, if you would like to continue, my rate ranges from $35 - $80 per hour. You do not need to make any decisions about payment options until after the second session, and you are free to change payment options at any time.
Here are the details:
1) Base rate is $75 per hour.
2) Location discount:
Subtract $15 per hour when you come to my apartment for tutoring. I am located near the intersection of Page Mill Road and El Camino Real in Palo Alto. I live with my girlfriend and a cat named Lola if this is a problem (e.g. allergies), then we can meet at a coffee shop a block away for the same location discount.
3) Block discount:
Subtract $5 per hour when you pre-pay for a block of 10 hours.
Subtract an additional $5 per hour if you also reserve a regular weekly time slot.
4) Scheduling discount:
Subtract $5 per hour when you schedule a session on a weekday afternoon. (These time slots deserve a discount since they are not in high demand.)
5) Referral discount:
Subtract $10 per hour when you refer a friend to me for tutoring. Discount remains for as long as the friend continues to see me.
6) Outreach program:
Add an optional $5 per hour if you would like to participate in the outreach program. This contribution will go directly into the Frank Newman Outreach Fund.
I make it a priority to offer free tutoring to underprivileged students. I recruit these students from public schools in the Peninsula area. For each hour of my outreach tutoring, I receive $30 from the Frank Newman Outreach Fund (much less than I receive for my usual tutoring).
I accept lower payment for outreach tutoring so that my tutoring does not worsen social stratification. It is very important to me for people of all backgrounds to have the opportunity to benefit from quality tutoring.
The outreach program is optional and flexible I welcome donations of any size, and you are free to begin or end your participation at any time.
