WILDLIFE CAMP DIRECTOR
CAMP
The Hayward Area Recreation and Park District offers a summer Wildlife Camp for children from ages 3 through 12 exploring wildlife at a 10-acre community nature center specializing in local wildlife. The camp has six one-week sessions beginning June 26 through August 11. Each week is designed for a particular age/grade level and has 12-15 students enrolled. The camp is held at Sulphur Creek Nature Center, 1801 D Street, Hayward, which is located in a wooded canyon one mile east of town in the Hayward hills. There are over 100 species of native animals on display for the public, a full range of educational programs, picnic facilities, hiking trails and a seasonal stream. The camp introduces children to wildlife using live animals, various bio-facts and visual aids, through games, projects, craft activities, hikes, puppet shows and songs.

DUTIES
The Wildlife Camp Director is responsible for developing and implementing the program and activities for all grade levels. This includes ordering all supplies and equipment, training volunteers to assist in the program, maintaining safe control of groups, serving as liaison between the agency and class registrants, completing necessary paperwork, evaluating both program and volunteer assistants, coordinating activities and projects, and maintaining the registration and attendance roster.

QUALIFICATIONS
Academic background preferably in the life sciences with emphasis on wildlife ecology, natural history, biology, environmental education, teaching or related fields. Applicants should have previous experience in a leadership capacity, organizing and implementing a variety of activities with children. Experience working with wildlife and domestic animals in hands-on situations with children is desirable.

COMPENSATION
$4,500 (includes 2 weeks preparation, 6 weeks instruction, 3 days wrap-up)

EMPLOYMENT DATES
Two week prep time prior to camp and
Monday – Friday June 26 – August 11, 2006
Three days at end of camp allotted for break-down, clean-up and final administrative details.
