Yeah, right. The brainiacs at Beyond try to make a big deal about the barcode scanner on the confusingly-titled Beyond Smart iCEBOX Bread Maker, but we'd bet our last Old Style that exactly zero of you will ever use it. Is it a bell? Is it a whistle? It's neither, because an actual bell or whistle could conceivably be of some use. Not so for the barcode thing, as gimmicky a gimmick as ever gimmicked. And then there's Beyond's equally corny wireless network scheme, where all of your kitchen appliances can link up via SANI cards. What are they supposed to do then? Start a fantasy football league? Swap Angelina Jolie JPGs? How about if they just, you know, like, cook stuff?
Fortunately, the Beyond Smart iCEBOX Bread Maker is amply endowed with yeast-rising capabilities. With its 2.5-lb. capacity and programmable timer, it'll smother your home's usual funk in a rich, yeasty blanket of scent at your command. The bright backlit LCD is as easy to read as Goodnight Moon, and its sleek brushed metal casing coordinates well with the other Beyond appliances you've seen on popular web sites like Woot.com. The barcode scanner is a superfluous, cheesy novelty, but it's not like you have to eat it.
