What can 50 different authors do when they collaborate on the same novel, with each one writing a different chapter?
Honestly, it's not a question I've pondered my entire life or anything, but while sitting here working on my own 'Great American Novel' the thought came to me to try and find out. Lord knows I have to do something to make a little money and I think the eBay toast market is pretty well saturated at this point.
I want to see how a story will turn out when one person writes a chapter for a novel, puts it up for bid, then the winner of the auction writes the 2nd chapter and so on...No one, until the end, will know how it will turn out.
After it's complete it will be sent back to me and I will edit anything that needs editing and work on getting it published. (I've got a few connections in publishing)
All authors will share equally in any profits from the book, and I will draw up an agreement and mail to the winning bidders with my signature and a place for everyone to sign as the auction progresses.
Here's how it will work. I will start the first chapter-keeping it at around 8-12 pages double-spaced in 12 pt. Courier font on Ms Word. At the end of the auction I will email my chapter to the winning bidder, who will pick up where I have left off and write their own chapter while their auction is running. They may list it as they wish and invite input from interested eBayers if they'd like. (I'm doing this as a 10 day auction to begin with to hopefully draw more attention-you may want your own auction to be much shorter once things get rolling!)
The novel will continue like this until 50 authors have all written an 8-12 page chapter. The 50th person to win the auction will be the one to write the ending and should send the completed book back to me for editing and publisher shopping. Along the way I'm sure this will get LOTS of publicity!!!!
I will be writing my chapter while this auction is ongoing and will have it completed by the ending date.
Now, I don't expect everyone to be a seasoned writer to do this (although if a famous writer would get involved and contribute a chapter it would wonderful!), but I would love for the people that do bid to be folks that will take this seriously, complete their chapter and re-list the book-so please don't bid unless you will follow through so we can make this happen!!!!
