College Summit
College Summit is an award-winning national nonprofit strengthening the college-going culture in low-income schools and communities. 79% of students who attend a College Summit workshop enroll in college, and 80% stay in college.
Each summer, College Summit calls on hundreds of summer volunteers—alumni, college/graduate students, young professionals, community leaders, and high-level executives—to help talented low-income high school students enroll in college. At intensive 4-day residential workshops across the country, volunteers coach students through the college transition process. Commitments range from four days to multiple weeks during the summer.
Writing Coach Role
Top corporate executives join university professors, journalists, lawyers, and other professionals to form a unique mix of volunteers serving as Writing Coaches, who spend the Workshop mining the images and stories that make up the students' lives. Having been trained on the first afternoon in College Summit's Writing Curriculum (designed specially for us by a Harvard writing instructor), Writing Coaches help form a safe environment where students can reflect on and articulate their personal statements. For those new to College Summit, serving as a Writing Coach can be an excellent, hands-on introduction to the organization with a relatively small time commitment (minimum of one four-day workshop).
College Counselor Role
Expert College Counselors bring a wealth of knowledge about the thousands of college and career options available to College Summit students. Through one-on-one meetings with each student, College Counselors help students define a manageable path to college. Through these sessions, college becomes a reality for many students who never before considered college an option.
