General Information: The Sonoma Student Union Corporation (SSUC) is an auxiliary enterprise of Sonoma State University. The SSUC has three components: the Student Union, Campus Recreation, and the Center for Gender & Cultures. The Center is one of several organizational centers created this year to address such needs as leadership education, recreation and wellness, as well as student government and representation. The Center combines what were previously separate programs for women and minority student organizations.
Position: Working under the general direction of the Executive Director of the Student Union Corporation, the incumbent provides leadership for services and programs helping to promote interaction and understanding among the diverse student population of Sonoma State University and to positively impact the satisfaction, retention and graduation of the students. This is accomplished by providing guidance, oversight, and advisement for a broad range of initiatives that focus on student involvement in organizations associated with the Center, which include cultural student organizations, such as ethnic Greek fraternities and sororities, women’s organizations, and the stop hate on campus organization, DREAM; and a variety of training formats. Provides an examination of the Center’s concepts, making recommendations for future growth. The incumbent is responsible for providing guidance and inspiration for the effective planning of major campus celebrations and cultural events, a major lecture series, annual award and recognition programs and others as assigned; encourages the engagement of students with community resources; and promotes dialogue on issues of diversity and inclusiveness though participation on University committees. In addition, the incumbent is responsible for oversight of the Center’s financial management, including the preparation of the Center’s annual budget, and assisting student organizations with their fiscal management; and the writing and submission of grant proposals to enhance the Center’s growth.
Qualifications: A Masters degree in a student affairs program or a directly related field and three years of experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience is required. The successful candidate will have a general knowledge of the principles, practices and trends in the field of student affairs, as well as direct experience in the area of multicultural affairs. The ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of the organizational procedures and activities of the campus; experience developing, planning and organizing events, training seminars and group presentation are required. The successful candidate will have the ability to advise students both individually and in a groups on complex student-related matters; analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with person at all levels, and write and present reports; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning and implementing programs; complete multiple projects with conflicting timelines; work collaboratively; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, administration, faculty and the community. In addition the successful candidate will be experienced in the financial management of programs; including budget creation and management. Evenings and weekend work hours are required.
