Elementary School Site Coordinator Position Description
Sports4Kids (S4K) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to enhance and create youth sports opportunities. We believe that play should be an integral part of every childs school day. We currently work with 75 local elementary and middle schools to provide sports programming both during school and after-school. Our programs focus on involving children of all ability levels as a means of promoting physical activity as an integral part of a healthy lifestyle. Responsibilities
Planning and implementing sports- and play-based programming during recess, in school and after school hours at a public elementary school. Program components include, but are not limited to:
Working diligently to create an environment where play is supported and encouraged
Facilitating games/activities on the playground during all recess and lunch periods, setting basic rules for play, setting boundaries and school rules, modeling positive behavior and fair play; maintaining all school sports equipment and devising a checkout system
Coordinating skills- building classes for each classroom, to create and reinforce a school-wide culture of play (including planning and prep time)
Coordinating a high quality after-school program for 25 kids with a homework center, healthy snack and structured activities/field trips
Running a daily Junior Coach youth leadership program with monthly trainings
Recruiting and coaching teams for developmental sports leagues, organizing practice, and coach/referee one evening a week during each league
Planning tournaments, field trips and special events during school hours and after school
Organizational/Professional Responsibilities
Ability/Willingness to commit to over 40 hours/week of service, including participating in occasional night and weekend service opportunities
Traveling to, attending, and actively engaging in staff development trainings
Maintaining and timely submission of all required paperwork including timesheets and daily attendance
Ability/Willingness to develop working relationships with teachers/school site staff
Punctuality and consistency
Skills
College degree preferred and/or demonstrated experience leading groups of children in a youth program/school setting
Experience working with small and large groups of children
Positive group management skills
Understanding of youth development principles and practices, especially relating to issues of equity, inclusion and healthy competition within sports and physical activity
Experience interacting with diverse communities and community organizations
Ability to manage assorted tasks with a focus on enhancing the experience for youth during the school day
Ability to integrate into an existing school community
Ability to offer a variety of approaches to sports and physical activity
Sense of humor and flexibility (important!)
Commitment to young people, sports, play, education and community change a must
Conversational ability in one or more of the following languages is a plus: Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Cambodian
Benefits
All new hires will be part of AmeriCorps, the national service program (www.americorps.org/joining). Corps members receive a living allowance of $21,800 plus a $4725 education stipend after completing a minimum 1700 hours of service (8/21/06 through June 07). Full health benefits. Some Corps members may also qualify for reimbursement of childcare expenses.
