Description SPECIALIST COUNSELOR, Full Time

Position Summary –
The Specialist Counselor will provide vocational, education, housing preparation and/or independent living skill services for homeless young adults who are admitted to the Turning Point transitional housing programs. This position will include networking with community-based employment, education, health, benefits, and housing programs. This position requires working as a team with other transitional housing program staff in providing services to transitional housing residents as needed.

Specific responsibilities/duties
Position provides client services in literacy education, job preparation, interpersonal skills, long-term career/education assessment, money/household management training, nutrition/health education, referrals/ support in locating suitable housing, benefits advocacy and application assistance, and referral to community resources.

Qualifications –
1) BA or AA degree with 6 years experience required
2) Experience with homeless youth preferred
3) Demonstrated expertise in at least one of the following areas: vocational services, educational assessments and advocacy, independent living skills, or housing and benefits advocacy.
4) Ability to work independently as a member of a collaborative team
5) Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing
6) Computer proficiency and able to work on a computer for up to 20 hours a week

Our clients are children, teens, and young adults diagnosed with developmental disabilities and emotional disorders that may be transitioning from foster care or homelessness, recovering from abuse, or underserved by traditional service providers. We provide over 4,000 youth each year with residential care, special education, vocational training, transitional housing, homeless youth programs, school-based counseling, and in-home support on residential campuses in Oakland, Vacaville, and San Diego and in homes, schools, and communities in over a dozen counties throughout California.

Compensation
Starting salary: $14.25 (DOE) and OUTSTANDING BENEFITS – Full health benefits to include medical, dental, vision, retirement/401(k) plan, paid life insurance, employee assistance program, flexible spending account, and supplemental insurance.
