STATEMENT OF QUALIFICATIONS AND DUTIES


EDUCATION DIVISION
SUMMER CAMP COUNSELOR
(Full-time, Temporary)

POSITION SALARY RANGE:

NE3 ($10.87 to $17.00) per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

To help plan, lead, and improve camp activities.

To supervise campers, camp volunteers at The SF/SPCA and other locations during camp hours.

To provide an atmosphere in which campers will be able to learn about dogs and/or cats through unique and entertaining activities, projects, and animal contact.

To assist the Humane Education Coordinator with the preparation of camp activities, the acquisition of materials and other preparations needed for a successful session.

To maintain the cleanliness, organization and usability of the camp room throughout the day.

To perform all duties in a manner that assures the safety of oneself, the staff and volunteers of the SF/SPCA, the campers, and animals involved in any and all activities.

To note and bring to the attention of the Humane Education Coordinator any problems (especially those which may affect the camp, the campers, any of the dogs/cats or property of The SF/SPCA0.

To promote a caring attitude toward all animals and to perform duties in a manner which would encourage contributions to The SF/SPCA and its programs.

To model for children empathy, compassionate and respect for everyone and everything.

Cooperate with staff, volunteers, and departments of The SF/SPCA in a respectful and appropriate manner.

Complete animal training (volunteer level handling classes) prior to camp if needed.

EDUCATION DIVISION
LEAD SUMMER CAMP COUNSELOR

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Two years of college course work. (Qualifying work experience will be considered as an alternative, on the basis that one-year of related experience may be substituted for one year of education.)

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Responsible for filing taxes as required by the IRS for Independent Contractors.

Must successfully complete the required work project (one week of instructing camp) for payment.

EXPERIENCE, ABILITIES, AND QUALITIES REQUIRED

Experience working as a camp counselor/teacher is preferred, but not required.

Experience working with children of any age is a plus.

Experience as a camp counselor/teacher preferred, but candidates with experience and/or knowledge of dogs and cats and a desire to work with children will be considered.

Have an interest in animals and a willingness to learn about The SF/SPCA, dogs and/or cats, their needs, similarities and differences.

Ability to communicate, set limits, and maintain an easy-going attitude with children and role model compassion for animals.

An ability to lead craft projects and to sing songs would be helpful.

An understanding of dog and/or cat behavior as well as a good foundation in animal husbandry, grooming, basic needs and sheltering.
