The Database Marketing team (DBM) oversees all strategic and tactical marketing efforts (primarily outbound email) directed to registered users of the company’s online travel services. The team’s charter is to maximize lifetime value of the customer universe by impelling visitors to register, users to make purchases, and customers to make incremental purchases.

Job Description:

This position is responsible for planning and executing mass market email campaigns, and also responsible for optimizing deal relevance. As one of two program managers, s/he is responsible for our two classes of “mass” mailings. S/he works with the lead program manager and the operations specialist to maximize the profitability of all DBM campaigns. As leader of deal relevance, s/he is charged with using technology to target offers (“deals”) and motivate our users to give us insights into their travel needs (via TripWatcher, etc)

Essential Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Campaign Management

  • Manage an existing portfolio of ongoing email campaigns. This includes launching weekly campaigns to the entire base of registered users.
  • Work with on-staff operations expert and third party email vendor to identify and troubleshoot problems, and identify and execute against enhancement opportunities.
  • Conceptualize and initiate tests toward continually improving key metrics (opens, clicks, quotes and purchases)
  • Conceptualize and execute new mass mail campaigns. This requires working with creative services, engineering and data warehouse peer groups.
  • Analyze campaign metrics to feed into future initiatives:
  • Analyze campaign performance for assigned campaigns toward incrementally improving key metrics.
  • Analyze campaign performance for non-triggered campaigns toward identifying opportunities for new mass mail campaigns.

Deal Relevance

  • Serve as internal advocate and spokesman for the improving deal relevancy.
  • Working with product management and the data warehouse team, conceptualize and execute enhancements to deal relevance.
  • Manage the enhancement of the TripWatcher functionality.
  • Measure the effectiveness of initiatives to improve deal relevance.

Team Membership

  • Act as the primary DBM team representative on technical development projects that impact product and deal relevance.
  • Contribute to annual strategic and tactical planning.
  • Contribute to quarterly campaign summary presentation.
  • Support the Director of Database Marketing in investigating and implementing new technologies, services, automation capabilities, and/or vendor solutions that enhance the database marketing team’s charter.
  • Become recognized within the company as an expert on database marketing practice.

Success Measurement:

  • On-time mailing of mass campaigns.
  • Maintenance or improvement of key DBM metrics for assigned campaigns: open, click-through, quote and purchase rates.
  • Increase in usage of and impact from TripWatcher.
  • Quality of functional campaign development.

Required skills and mindset:

  • Excellent organizational and record keeping skills. This is a fast paced operation, and it’s critical to be able to keep multiple balls in the air at once, then have clear documentation so you remember what happened once you’ve move to the next project.
  • Deep knowledge of email marketing – minimum of 3 years of Database/Direct Marketing experience required. We’ve benefited time and again from the specific prior experience of our team members. We hope the new staff member brings fresh operational strategies to us.
  • A desire for ownership. You’ll enjoy the freedom and visibility of being able to marshal innovations through under your own banner, and also the responsibility to do it right.
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks without losing your focus.
  • Analytical bias. This means: comfortable using empirical data to support marketing decisions; ability to glean intelligence and behavioral inferences from data; love of data; demonstrable history of using data to improve profits.
  • Curiosity. We have a lot of room for improvement. Curiosity – about what our competitors are doing, about how our users think, about how our products work, about what others inside Hotwire would like to try, and about how our vendors’ other clients do things – will be the driver of new breakthrough ways of doing things.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.
