The City of Redwood City

The City of Redwood City has an excellent opportunity for an individual to be responsible for managing the permits center in the Building & Inspection Division of the Community Development Services Department. The incumbent will perform management, technical, and administrative work in planning and coordinating the activities of Building & Inspection personnel. Typical responsibilities include, but are not limited to: assisting in the review of building plans and specifications; reviewing and resolving difficult and complex inspection and enforcement problems; and investigating and securing compliance with housing, zoning, and environmental standards.


JOB REQUIREMENTS: The ideal candidate will be proficient in the use of computer programs including G.I.S., Trakit, Excel, Crystal Reports, and web-based applications; will be a code expert, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple tasks; have the ability to supervise support staff; will successfully perform work requiring analytical ability and be able to synthesize and summarize information; will use initiative and independent judgement; will be a team player.

Minimum qualifications include the equivalent of completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by ICC certification, an associate degree in Building Inspection technology, or other specialized training. At least three years of experience equivalent to a Building Inspector II with demonstrated proficiency as a combination building inspector and plans examiner. A valid California driver's license and satisfactory driving record are required.

Knowledge of:
* Principles of supervision, training, performance evaluation, work flow organization and scheduling
* Principles and techniques of building inspection work
* Accepted safety standards and methods of building construction
* Energy and disabled access regulations, building codes and ordinances enforceable by the City
* Principles, practices and procedures in the construction trades, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical and heating/air-conditioning trades

Skill to:
* Proficiently operate a personal computer and building permit computer systems
* Operate a motor vehicle safely
* Effectively organize schedules, files, projects, inspections, and technical data

Ability to:
* Analyze, interpret, and accurately check building plans, specifications and building codes
* Enforce a variety of related City codes and regulations with firmness and tact
* Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
* Evaluate and improve systems and procedures in the Building Department, and oversee and review the work of others

$6,352 - $7,723/month.
