JOB SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Facilities Manager, transports students in a safe and orderly manner. Operates a school bus over designated routes to transport school children. Arranges for automotive repair work and maintenance on Second Start school vehicles. Conducts daily inspections on vehicles, equipment, and reporting their condition. Maintains and submits a daily record of inspection to the Facilities Manager. Informs the supervisor of unsafe equipment or situations. Maintains and submits an accurate and complete trip record including all miles driven and problems noted. Maintains bus and other motor equipment in clean and safe operating condition. Maintains and submits records of estimates for repairs and parts used to the Facilities Manager. Conducts training on student safety during emergency evacuation procedures. Any other responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Drives a bus as needed over designated routes in accordance with time schedules, picking up and discharging students. There should never be 20 or more people in the bus at any one time. The total number of individuals in the bus should be twenty or less, including the driver.
2. Escorts student(s) across streets when necessary, stopping traffic as necessary.
3. Transports students and teachers on field trips to various locations, choosing the best route and making departure and arrival time as scheduled.
4. Maintains proper order among student on the bus and waiting at the bus stops, following Second Start/Pine Hill School policies regarding the disciplining of children and contact with the parents and other citizens. Maintains a safe transportation environment, which includes disciplining students who are creating safety hazards and reporting the same to the responsible Behavior Specialist.
5. Checks on schedule changes and passenger absences. Receives regular dispatching orders from the Registrar limited to the daily pick-up and/or delivery of students in need of transportation.
6. Submits required documentation to the Facilities Manager of any daily transportation schedule changes and/or events, which deviate from the established transportation schedule.
7. Inspects, reporting, and recording conditions which relate to the bus and usage.
8. Is responsible for the daily cleaning and sanitizing of the bus.
9. Performs those duties, which protect the health and safety of students and employees.
10. Works in cooperation with other Facilities/Transportation personnel, administration, faculty, and staff regard to with the conduct of activities in this function.
11. Performs other assigned tasks during times in the work schedule that does not require driving as assigned by the Facilities Manager.
12. Acts as an assistant to the Facilities Manager and makes recommendations for future needs.
13. Promptly fills out all paperwork and documentation following an accident.
14. Performs related duties as assigned.

Job Description

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Must be able to diagnose basic mechanical difficulties and arrange for maintenance repairs.
• Must understand and follow oral and written directions.
• Must observe legal and defensive driving practices.
• Must have prior exposure to driving a school bus during adverse weather and traffic conditions, abusive or uncooperative students.
• Must maintain routine records related to work performed.
• Must have basic operation and maintenance of the van and equipment.
• Knowledge of streets and major highways in Santa Clara County.
• Must have thorough knowledge of health and safety regulations and procedures.
Work cooperatively with others.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• High school diploma or equivalency.
• A minimum of two years experience and knowledge as a bus driver.
• Commercial Driver's License (Class B) with a passenger endorsement, and California Highway Patrol School Bus Driver Certificate required.
• Must have a driving record clear of revocations, suspensions, and cancellations for the past three (3) years.
• Must not have a criminal record, and must be clear of convictions.
• First aid and CPR training required.
• Must pass random drug tests.
• Must pass medical clearance.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

• Lifting, bending, pushing, and moving objects weighing up to 75 pounds.
• Seeing to drive and to observe work performed. Ability to read traffic signs and signals and respond appropriately.
• Hearing and speaking to communicate with students, parents.
• Must be able to effectively communicate verbally in English fluently.
• Reaching above the shoulder, overhead and horizontally, and climbing steps into the bus.
• Ability to carry out oral and written instructions, keep simple records, and make reports.
• Ability to accurately report accident locations, conditions, and accurately complete reporting forms.
• Ability to perform preventative maintenance checks and complete reporting requirements. Frequent local travel is required. Local travel is defined as seventy-five miles or less one-way.
• Position may require occasional long distance travel defined as 75 to 150 miles one way.
