First, one must define peophile.
Second, one must define a child.
If it is acceptable for a 42 year old man to have sex with a 17 year old and lower the age of consent to 16, then I would wager the next thing would be to lower it to 14, or do we even lower it to when a girl first begins her menses. After all, she is technically able to bear a child at that age - and some begin at 10 or 11.
And if 42 and 17 are acceptable, what about a 60 year old with a 15 year old? How many fathers would, truthfully, welcome with open arms, a 60 year old man who was there to take his 15-year daughter out to have sex with her?
When it comes to one's own, the reaction might be entirely different.
Just where do we draw the line, or do we just say everything goes? The issue, as I see it, is not just the physical maturity of the girl in question. It is just as much the emotional and mental maturity.
A man 42 or even 30 for that matter, has most likely been around the block a few times. A girl of 15 or 16, in most cases (yes, I agree, not all), have not, and therefore are much more vulnerable, easily manipulated and often times coerced into giving consent. Quite often a girl that is with a much older man is lacking a positive father figure in her life.
Prehaps an "old" man who seeks out very young girls does so to bolster his aging ego, in an effort to deny his own mortality. They like the freshness of youth, but youth always ages. Then there are those that seek to exploit innocence. They feel a certain domination over a young girl, and like the idea they can "mold" them to their pleasing. It is just not a matter of "some aging women who deeply resent the power of younger women".
It is true that the age of consent is 16 in other countries. It is also true in other countries girls as young as 12 are married.
As far as teen age pregnancy, this has been on the decline for some time now. I do not believe this was the reason for the "crackdown". It is my opinion, the Internet had a great deal to do with this, in that it became much easier for pedophiles to pursue their prey.
And, the fact remains men have been in political power for many, many years and actually still are, although women are making inroads. They were the ones drafting the laws in the first place, and, for the most part, now carrying them out, not women with their "moralist means of sniping".

Police going out of their way to entrap people make it too easy and catch people who would not otherwise violate the law. In addition, those cases are also consensual even if the person is underage. Consensual underage sex with someone in their late teens should be considered in a different category than raping a child. But these categories are all blurred together by those who yell angry accusations about pedophlies.
I never hear people talking about studies that show at what ages their are problems with having sex. Decisions about peoples' lives, like prison sentances, need to be very carefully thought-out with evidence from studies. We should stop pedophlies but define that carefully. Most states and countries have an age of consent of 16.
Currently the crack down on statutory rape in california is being justified by a higher incidence of pregancy, but I have not seen the stuides and doubt that is true. Why would an old person who is less impulsive and knows they are breaking the law leave evidence and run the risk of preganancy that would incriminate them. Somebody please show me those studies.
People are making decisions on purely emotional and irrational bases. What we have now is immature people with empty lives and emotional and sexual problems who need an enemy becaues they can't face themselves. They project their shame as hatred. And typically some are aging women who deeply resent the sexual power of younger women and want to stop the competition with their legal moralist means of sniping.
