Description Nope, it is still driven by market economics in general. Just because you took one benefit --ie nice parents, understanding, etc. over the nutsos just means that you were driven by your own market forces and simply weighed the good and the bad.

I am at home most of the time, and work only a few hours at night, but make a very good amount of money. It is intermittent, however, but I need to make sure my household runs well. We have paid an equivalent salary of $40,000 in rent/wages/benefits, and some were good, some were bad... but only a few felt that they both needed a steady income as well as an hourly outrageous wage. They took a steady salary and the guarantee that it would be there, and in turn they may have given up a higher but far less steady means of making a living. It is simple. I am happy to pay 20.00 per hour as long as I need someone temporarily, as it is understood if they are just filling in they will get more. If I employ them on a salary, however, they get paid the same as my other employees... with an actual salary, knowing that they benefit from the regularity of it.

Enough of the attempting to guilt the parents into paying more than they should by acting as if by paying a salary of 400 per week take home for 50 hours per week of a live-in nanny is akin to child abuse. Take into account all benefits, the fact that it is post taxes, compare it with others, and you will realize that many nannies currently make what beginning nurses do... and for far less pain and hassle.

So make a choice, most of you... do you want to ask for a high rate per hour, for just a few hours, or do you want a steady gig with a salary and guaranteed hours as well as money to help support your families, friends, etc. There are a few of you who may be extraordinary and have all this experience and talent, and you will be able to earn the top pay. To expect that most people who throw their hats into the ring to care for kids as nannies are of the same level, however, is so mistaken... and these are the people who live by the market rules, as do we all...
