| I'm certainly one of the lucky ones. I worked for a start-up in the city as a design planner then i moved onto funds asset manager then to "marketing manager". i got out in 1998 and cashed in my stock on some advice from a friend who also left his dot.com job. i bought a tri-level condo in redwood shores with cash and put the rest in some conservative mutual funds (ie. harbor capital, dodge cox, euro pacific groth fund etc). so with a paid off home and a little over 1.8 million in the bank i started my life of leisure. for a while i had thought i had made the jump too early and could have easily banked another million, but after looking back i did the right thing. my old company is long gone and most of my co-workers have left the bay area or had to find 8-5 grind jobs and just trying to rebound and make something of their lives. today i am 43 years old single and living off the interest on my investments. i am still very careful and conservative with my money, i drive a used 2002 (paid off) sedan. i work from time to time to keep busy, but nothing that involves much stress. currently i work at a starbucks in the area, but am getting ready to leave that job so that i can travel to africa for a month. heading first to botswana, then to south africa and mozambique. thats pretty much what i live for now is just travel around about twice a year or so. again, i am one of the lucky few who just by chance got in at the right time and never really had to work hard for any of this. i dont take any of this for granted.
