The Quality Assurance Manager is accountable for developing and implementing manufacturing standards, procedures and guidelines to ensure quality of Company products and packaging in a way that manages risks to consumers and the company, optimizes product shelf life, and minimizes product and packaging defects. The jobholder works closely with research and development and operations management to develop good manufacturing processes at bakeries consistent with FDA requirements and Corporate standards, and is responsible for ongoing audit and problem resolution with bakeries and co-packers to ensure consistent quality.

1. Collaborate with product research and development to establish new plants to the point of production readiness. Ensure that good manufacturing standards and procedures are defined, documented and implemented at bakeries and co packers to ensure quality of product and packaging.

2. Conduct regular audits and quality control follow ups on site at bakeries and packaging facilities to identify and resolve problems. Evaluate performance on site and make inductive decisions to stop the production line in the event of quality problems. Develop and maintain procedure manuals and guidelines and ensure that bakery and co packer personnel follow quality control and recipe security procedures and guidelines for managing potential risks to product.

3. Develop and implement lot control and product recall procedures and processes for warehouse and bakery personnel. Prepare reports and analyses of product quality, audit results and overall vendor performance. Identify significant recurring vendor problems and recommend termination or renegotiation of contracts.

4. Manage the taste test program, providing guidelines for random sampling of finished goods shipments. Issue quality control holds on lot numbers, return or dispose of defective products, and coordinate with purchasing and inventory control on QC holds and returns to ensure that credits are processed to general ledger.

5. Work with research and development to plan and execute projects to enhance quality of product, packaging, and equipment, such as increasing shelf life, reducing defects, improving foreign matter protection, researching nutritional and special consumer requirements and ensuring that labels contain appropriate consumer alert.

6. Participate with research and development and operations department management to source suppliers of packaging and ingredients, and to identify performance issues from a quality control standpoint.

7. Supervise staff’s planning and implementation of projects, evaluate and provide feedback on activities, and monitor operating budgets. Train and develop staff members in Quality Assurance programs and tools.

8. Collaborate with the Director of R&D in setting staff’s performance objectives, develop work plans and monitor and provide feedback on performance. Participate in employment decisions and resolution of performance issues.


Job Difficulty:

The objective of this position is to provide policies and procedures, and provide for ongoing audit of production, to ensure that products are not shipped in less than perfect condition. This requires development of checkpoints at the bakeries and co packing facilities, at the warehouse when goods are received, and maintenance of lot samples to test quality as product ages. In the event of defects, the incumbent is authorized to stop the production line and put quality holds on products and lot numbers. The jobholder then investigates causes of problems and works with bakers and co packers on resolution. This position works with product research and development and laboratory personnel and applies analytical skills to research enhancements to products, identify risks to products and investigate special consumer requirements.

Education and Experience:
A bachelor's degree in business, emphasizing production management, product engineering or a related field, or equivalent direct work experience is required. Also required is 5 years' related experience including responsibility for product research and development, manufacturing and/or quality assurance in the packaged goods industry. In addition to technical and process flow knowledge of the food industry, successful performance requires excellent skills in verbal and written communications, analysis and judgment, interpersonal relations, influence management, and conflict resolution, as well as the ability to work with others to accomplish goals.

Special requirements: 25% travel for on site visits to bakers and co packers in California, Nevada and other states is an essential function of this position, as is tasting of all products. Product related allergies or special dietary requirements would limit the incumbent's ability to carry out responsibilities.
