Founded in 1974, Swords to Plowshares is a community-based not-for-profit organization that provides counseling and case management, employment and training, supportive housing, residential treatment, and legal assistance to veterans in the San Francisco Bay Area. We promote and protect the rights of veterans through advocacy, public education, and partnerships with local, state, and national entities. Believing that war causes wounds and suffering that last beyond the battlefield, our mission is to heal the wounds of war and to restore dignity, hope, and self-sufficiency to all veterans in need, and to significantly reduce homelessness and poverty among veterans.
Swords’ Veterans Academy opened in 2000, is located on the grounds of the Presidio of San Francisco, and consists of 100 units of supportive housing for disabled, formerly homeless veterans. We have an immediate opening for a full time Counselor/Case Manager.
Summary of Position: The Counselor/Case Manager provides direct supportive services to Veterans Academy residents, including individual counseling and case management to an assigned caseload. Responsibilities include conducting groups, crisis intervention, crisis de-escalation, monitoring recreational activities and the development of linkages to community resources. Develops and supports activities which promote the residents stability in housing and sobriety leading to work, volunteerism and educational opportunities.
Essential Job Requirements:
· Provide counseling and case management to an assigned caseload.
· Conduct groups.
· Facilitate recreational activities.
· Maintain current and appropriate documentation including progress notes, Life Plans and incident reports.
· Submit daily, weekly and monthly reports in an accurate and timely fashion.
· Basic computer skills (Word, Excel, etc.).
· Participate in admission screenings, orientations, clinical case conferences, property management meetings and individual supervision.
· Attend all required trainings to ensure individual and professional growth.
· Develop linkages in the service of providing free recreational activities for our residents.
· Engage and collaborate with residents to identify skills and clarify goals.
· Identify work that leads to stability, sobriety, work, volunteerism and other opportunities and collaborate with residents to achieve these steps.
· Perform other related duties as assigned by the Clinical Coordinator and the Housing, Deputy and Executive Director.
Required Education:
· Minimum of a BA degree in Behavioral Science. Masters degree preferred. A recognized certification or experience may be considered.
Required Experience:
· Minimum of three (3) years experience providing counseling, case management, mental health and substance abuse services to disadvantaged or otherwise “hard to serve” clients, with a minimum of two (2) years in human service agencies.
Required Skills:
· Good written and verbal communication skills.
· Crisis intervention, de-escalation and conflict resolution skills.
· Ability to outreach and engage clients.
· Advocate for mainstream and other resources.
· A working understanding of the readjustment problems of Vietnam-era veterans, including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), substance abuse/dependency and other mental health disorders.
· Familiarity with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) and experience that includes an ability to assess suicidal and homicidal risks and relapse behavior.
· Demonstrated commitment to cultural competency.
· Ability to discharge duties in a professional manner.
· Ability to demonstrate clear professional boundaries.
· Basic computer skills (Word, Excel, etc.).
· Ability to be a team player.
Work Schedule:
· 40 hour position
· 9AM to 5PM Monday through Friday
