As a Police Officer for the City of San Leandro you will perform a variety of law enforcement duties such as Patrol - Investigation – Traffic or DUI Enforcement - K-9 - SWAT - Undercover Operations - Crime Prevention – Public Safety.
Police Officers may work weekends, holidays and variable shifts. They may wear uniforms, carry weapons, drive patrol cards or ride motorcycles, and must comply with Departmental grooming standards. In addition, they work under potentially adverse and hazardous conditions and are on-call. The San Leandro Police Department places an emphasis on public service and enjoys widespread community and City Council support. The Department has invested in modern, up-to-date equipment and has a progressive management team.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Police Recruit Trainee: A high school diploma or GED with qualifying scores; be at least 18 years of age by date of appointment; ability to obtain and maintain a valid class C California driver’s license by date of appointment.
Entry Level: Possess all of the above plus completion of the Police Academy.
Lateral Level: Possess all of the above plus a valid P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate and one year recent work experience as a Peace Officer in the State of California.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH: Freedom of physical, visual, mental or emotional difficulties which would reduce or prevent effective job performance. Possess a personal history which is compatible with the effective performance of sworn Police duties.
INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: Ability to work in a fair, tactful, and courteous manner with a multi-cultural public, department personnel, and other City employees, exercising judgment, tact and self-restraint.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Have effective written and oral communications skills to give instructions and explanations, conduct information-gathering interviews, and write reports. Have adequate reading skills to understand and interpret orders, bulletins, laws, codes and court decisions.
WORK SHIFTS: The Police Officer position offers alternative work schedules which may include:
3 – 12 (3 days per week/12 hours per day + 8 hours every other week)
4 – 10 (4 days per week/10 hours per day)
5 – 8 (5 days per week/8 hours per day)
POLICE DEVELOPMENT INCENTIVE PLAN: After five years of continuous service, the following development incentive plan is available:
POST Intermediate = 4% Associate Degree = 4%
POST Advanced = 6% OR Baccalaureate = 6%
SALARY:
Police Recruit Trainee: $22.00 per hour with no benefits, while attending the Police Academy.
Police Officer (Entry or Lateral): $5,671 - $6,893* per month after successful completion of the Police Academy.
*not included in the salary is the City-paid employee retirement contribution of 9% and $100 additional pay for patrol, traffic and investigation assignments.

THE SELECTION PROCESS:
For appointment consideration you must pass:
1. Written Exam (qualifying only), waived for Lateral candidates
2. Physical Capabilities Demonstration Test (qualifying only), waived for Entry and Lateral candidates.
3. Personal Qualifications Interview (weighted 100%)
In addition, prior to appointment, a thorough background investigation will be conducted. As part of the selection process, you will be required to take a polygraph and psychological examination during the background investigation. Results of the polygraph and/or psychological examinations may cause you to be ineligible for employment and your name removed from the employment list. Persons under employment consideration will be fingerprinted and must pass a City-paid medical examination.
