Playscheme for the children in Social home in Rila, Bulgaria
July 30 – August 12, 2006
I am very happy to spend these two weeks in Bulgaria, and enjoyed playing with the children.
I liked playing with the children and trying to speak some Bulgarian or teach them some English so that we could communicate.
The group was nice. I especially liked that there were people from many different cultural backgrounds.
I really liked the work with the children. I learned more how to work with children, and how to put my own ideas into action. I was also impressed by the poverty in the orphanage and therefore I will be more thankful with what I have at home. Alex, 24 years
The volunteer workcamp is intended to play an integral part in offering a programme of purposeful and planned activities to the children during the summer holidays. It would be a chance for them to meet and learn from people from a different background and culture. The volunteer group is expected to offer the residents the opportunity to participate in new and different fun activities that work towards improving an individual’s communication techniques.
Volunteers will organise a program of social and play activities for the residents of the Social home. The program may include for example playground games, team games and sports (traditional sports and games from your own country, from Bulgaria, etc…), creative workshops, art performances, painting, venues in the community, presentation of the represented countries, English classes, hiking in the mountain, swimming in the river nearby, international evenings, etc. The group itself will choose and plan the activities with the kids.
The Social home in Rila provides home and care for 58 children from the age of 5 to 15 years. They are children deprived of parental care, children of single mothers, of alcoholics or criminals, children who are victims of violence or abuse. Some of the residents have mild physical or mental disabilities. The children are quite isolated and have great need of social interaction. The contact with the young people from different countries is expected to have positive impact over the kids.
The town of Rila lies close to the world famous Rila monastery, which is one of the Bulgarian sites protected by UNESCO. The group can visit it as well as other places of interest around. The mountain itself offers lots of possibilities for nature lovers.
