Description Incumbent is responsible for providing technical consultation and leadership in the design and development efforts of complex engineering projects and/or responsible for providing highly specialized and authoritative technical leadership to a small group of engineers working on a project. You must be able to initiate and consult on original and creative technical efforts.

Major Duties and Functions Include:


Leadership:
  • Initiates projects that will have a broad applicability in Cisco's product line applying unique approaches.
  • Takes a leadership role in the technical content of the system specification/unit functional specification; Responsible for leading technical decisions that will affect project, functional unit and/or deadlines.
  • Uses acquired professional knowledge to determine method for issue resolution
  • Exercises considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignment
  • May take a product through some or all stages of product development
  • Establishes well-defined technical direction and aligns the direction with that of Cisco
  • Provides technical leadership at the cross-functional level
  • Champions improvements, solves problems and makes decisions


  • Technical:
  • Applies extensive experience as a networking generalist or specialist to develop a new generation of network solutions, integrated with Cisco products as well as third party products
  • Responsible for technical content of design reviews and code walkthroughs
  • Reviews plan and writes specifications for assigned area
  • Identifies issues and technical interdependencies and suggests possible changes
  • Applies knowledge of Cisco's business strategies



  • Team Development:
  • Inspires team/organization success through positive feedback and constant support
  • Acts as a general technical resource for workers in assigned area and is viewed as a technical resource by peers in the same organization; helps engineers find ways to attack new or difficult problems
  • Develops or consults on internal training programs



  • Relationships:
  • Works with key customers in assigned areas to determine or create technical approaches to satisfy market needs
  • Initiates informal reviews of ideas and technical objectives within and across business units; interfaces cross-functionally and leads collaboration extending beyond work group
  • Partners with client groups in a team setting, taking ownership of their objectives to achieve business results
  • Able to represent Cisco by communicating technical business capabilities and strategies externally



  • What You Need to Succeed:

  • You must be an exceptional individual who possesses both technical and interpersonal skills, able to technically lead by example as well as verbally communicate your vision both internally (within AND across teams) and externally to clients. Professional presentation skills are a MUST.
  • You will be able to work in a fluid environment and drive the direction of the team, in addition to the direction of projects. You must be able to evaluate and sell alternative solutions, and effectively influence outcomes.
  • You will know the defined standards of the industry and be able to exercise your best judgment within those standards. You will also use your expertise and creativity for innovative product recommendation and solutions.
  • You will be a long-term, results-oriented person; completed work will be reviewed by management, and through consultation, over an extended time perspective before results are measured.
  • Previous work on high-end routers or network systems
  • Have led projects and/or been involved in product design
  • Solid experience with OS, UNIX, VxWorks, Solaris, POSIX, Real Time embedded OS
  • C programming
  • TCP/IP
  • SNMP preferred but not required
  • Hold a BS EE or BS CS and have 10 - 12 years of experience in internetworking technologies and applications.
