Position: Middle School Humanities Teacher

Urban Promise Academy’s mission is to develop effective learners and community members who have excellent academic skills and valuable habits of character. These traits include setting goals, accepting feedback, working constructively in teams, caring for others, and taking responsibility for their own education. We strive to support our students in building the skills and attitudes that will equip them for a rigorous college preparatory curriculum in the high school of their choice.

UPA is a new Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound (ELOB) school, which means learning expeditions provide the framework for all students to achieve academic excellence. Teachers receive coaching and attend ELOB workshops to gain skills to design, implement, and assess expeditionary learning.

Qualifications
Urban Promise Academy seeks an experienced Humanities (English & Social Studies) teacher who:

Required:
Has single subject English or Social Studies teaching credentials (and is willing to take CSET to fulfill requirement)
Has increased student achievement, especially in reading and writing
Has taught English Language Learners
Believes in literacy across the curriculum
Believes that ALL students can achieve at high levels regardless of their background or past experiences
Is open and willing to deeply examine his/her own teaching practice
Is committed to improving student achievement of historically oppressed students

Highly desired:
Has experience with Expeditionary/Experiential Learning
Has at least two years of teaching experience in an urban school
Has experience with or believes in the value of arts integration.
Has worked collaboratively with colleagues, students, and families to develop an innovative educational program

What support will be provided?
Coaching from Instructional Facilitator, ELOB (Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound) Coach, and Principal
Professional development opportunities and trainings on and off-site
Common planning time with collaborating teacher
On-site professional development including teacher inquiry practices
Professional learning community

Summer Commitments
Attend professional development/collaborative curriculum planning sessions in August (1 week paid)
Teach in-coming students during our one week “Early Start” program during August (1 week paid)
Opportunity to participate in “Coffee & Conversation” Activity with new families in late August



EXPECTATIONS FOR TEACHERS

Courseload
Teach two groups of seventh or eighth graders standards-based English and Social Studies curriculum
Plan and lead an advisory of 12-16 students every morning and Monday afternoons

Number of students
Teaching load of 50 students (CLASS SIZE of 25)
12-16 advisory students (may include duplicate students)

School is in session from 8:05 to 3:25 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. On Wednesdays and Fridays, students leave school at 1:50 and teachers work for the afternoon.

Advisor’s role
Be the advisor of 12-16 students for 3 years (6th-8th grade)
Advise students to make good academic and behavioral choices
Maintain contact with parents about the progress of their child
Hold parent conferences twice a year
Participate on advisees’ SST’s (Student Success Team) meetings
Implement and assist in the development of an advisory curriculum

Salary
