MANAGING ATTORNEY, NATIONAL CENTER FOR LESBIAN RIGHTS
Since its founding nearly 30 years ago, the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) has asserted bold and strategic national leadership in the struggle to win family rights for LGBT people and their children; expand immigration & asylum protections; support youth safety; create and promote a positive sports culture free from sexism, racism and homophobia; increase protections for LGBT elders; and advocate for transgender people. NCLR is a non-profit legal organization committed to advancing the rights and safety of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and their families through litigation, public policy advocacy, and public education.
Job Description
NCLR is seeking a Managing Attorney to coordinate the work of its in-house Legal Department and its joint initiatives with cooperating attorneys outside the organization. The Legal Department is staffed by four full-time attorneys, who work under the supervision of NCLR’s Legal and Executive Directors (also both attorneys), along with nearly a dozen law students who clerk with NCLR each year. This new position will report to the Executive and Legal Directors.
Specific duties and responsibilities:
• Manage all aspects of litigation in precedent-setting cases around the country.
• Litigation responsibilities include: (a) With the legal director, devise litigation strategies to produce the greatest positive impact most efficiently; (b) Research and draft appellate and amicus briefs and supervise research & drafting by other NCLR attorneys; (c) Manage each stage of litigation in trial and appellate courts; (d) Coordinate and review amicus briefs, and organize amicus strategies; (e) Screen requests for legal assistance, and investigate and develop potential new matters; (f) Consult with private lawyers who are handling matters related to NCLR’s areas of expertise and cases; (g) Provide day-to-day supervision of staff attorneys and manage administrative aspects of the legal department.
• Advocate with government agencies and officials, and advise policy makers.
• Speak, write, and help implement education strategies to change dialogue and advance public knowledge about all aspects of NCLR’s work.
• Coordinate/respond to requests for legal assistance from other attorneys working on cases related to gender, sexual orientation and gender identity.
• Engage in education efforts and policy advocacy.
Qualifications:
• Law Degree and at least ten years of experience, including 7 years as a practicing attorney and 5 years of litigation experience that prepares the applicant to manage complex litigation;
• At least 2-3 years experience managing legal and support staff;
• Extensive experience drafting and reviewing appellate briefs;
• A high level of independence and initiative, good judgment, excellent speaking and writing abilities;
• The ability to produce the highest caliber legal work, creativity, and a willingness to work with others toward the most effective strategies and initiatives to advance civil rights;
• The ability to talk about legal and other complex issues in clear, persuasive terms for non-lawyer audiences;
• A demonstrated awareness and commitment to a broad range of social and racial justice issues and an understanding of the multiple communities NCLR represents;
• Enthusiasm for the work of the organization and its potential, including a demonstrated commitment to public interest legal advocacy;
• Fluency in Spanish preferred.

Salary is commensurate with experience within the guidelines of NCLR's scale.
