Making Waves Education Program (MWEP) is a rigorous academic support program designed to facilitate college success for urban children living in economically depressed communities. Our students, called Wave-Makers, receive structured academic support after school Monday through Friday, and on Saturdays. The MWEP Wave Coordinator (WC) serves on a Leadership Team that is responsible for overseeing daily tutoring and teaching sessions. The position plans, assigns, coordinates, and reviews the work of all tutors and with other Leadership Team members, supervises and evaluates all tutors. The WC is responsible for student safety and discipline; administering the curriculum to students; and other functions related to program goals. The WC manages the administrative issues of a Wave, communicates regularly with families, and serves as an advocate for students, visiting schools as needed.
Under the general direction of the Program Director, the WC works to ensure the smooth operation of tutoring sessions and consistent implementation of MWEP policies. The WC organizes and keeps records of all Wave business and student performance data. The WC works to provide effective and timely communication between students, parents, Tutors, Leadership Team members, the Director and staff.
The WC must have the ability to problem-solve, mediate, and apply critical thinking skills whenever necessary. This position requires flexibility and the ability to adapt to various work situations as the need arises. The WC pays great attention to detail and follows through in a timely manner on both large and small projects.
The WC shows a commitment to academic achievement, which includes demonstrating academic and intellectual competence, high moral values and patience, as well as an understanding of the particular educational needs of both the MWEP population and that of an urban school district. The WC exhibits sensitivity to parents life experiences and perspectives, in addition to an understanding of parents role in their childrens education and participation in MWEP. The WC exhibits professional behavior at all times, maintains a positive attitude with regard to teaching and learning, and serves as a role model to Tutors and students. The WC is computer literate, keeps thorough records, both in a paper filing system and on a shared computer network.
Major Responsibilities:
Manage the classroom by checking in students and tutors, documenting student attendance, resolving behavior issues and conflicts, and monitoring students academic progress
Facilitate tutoring sessions, including start-up, snack, closure and transportation coordination
Teach students and assess academic needs
Discuss student obstacles and issues and create plans to address them
Problem solve with students, staff, parents and tutors
Set a positive tone and encourage student development
Give feedback on curriculum pace and effectiveness
Create and maintain relationships with students and parents/guardians
Maintain filing systems, supply inventory and the orderliness of classroom space
Conduct cost effective ordering and manage use of supplies to reduce waste and maintain inventory
Clean and prepare site in preparation for all sessions
Attend, conduct and participate in meetings and training sessions
Recruit and interview potential tutors
Supervise tutors in performing teaching activities; observe groups and give feedback
Plan, assign, coordinate and evaluate the work of tutors
Manage the payroll process
Serve as a member of the Outreach Team shadow students, meet with teachers and administrators, advise parents/guardians of student needs
Assist in school application and enrollment process
Assists with running MWEP required Summer Academy
Organizes and runs summer reading groups and private school preparation workshops/classes
Fill in for other Leadership Team members when they are not present
Provide student transportation as needed
Other duties as assigned
Tasks and Duties:
Meet regularly with the entire Leadership Team to discuss Wave business
Meet weekly with the Program Director
Attend and participate in Leadership Team trainings and meetings
Conduct family meetings related to student attendance, academic performance and behavior
Conduct student action planning meetings with each student and his/her family along with the entire Leadership Team
Attend curriculum or other reflection meetings, and follow through with revision or development projects
Plan and run tutor meetings semimonthly
Ensure that appropriate materials and information are available for tutor job performance
Read and respond to student evaluation and action forms on a regular basis
Submit written and verbal responses as follow-up to Action Form submissions
Ensure any new/updated Vital Information packets are completed before academic year starts
Assign tutors and students to groups
Manage classroom and activity transitions
Prepare snack food for distribution
Set up and maintain the waves filing systems
Create and mail home Progress Reports three times per year
Maintain Wave calendar
Update Gradebook
Update and maintain the Detention Log on a weekly basis and write an Action Form for any student receiving three, six or nine detentions for the same infraction
Update and maintain the Make-up Session Log on a weekly basis and write an Action Form for any student assigned to make-up session for three, six or nine of the same type of missing assignment (i.e. vocabulary homework, math homework, signatures)
Compile notes/reports for students meeting with the Program or Executive Director
Fill out the End-of-the-Year Student Report for every student
Administer diagnostic exams at the beginning and end of each year
Archive student records and create/add to student portfolios
Explain assignment log policy to teachers and parents/guardians
Emcee Big Group and make wave announcements
Assist Academic Coordinator with scheduling and running skill development workshops/classes
Review and correct daily TimeTrak exception reports
Review and approve TimeTrak bi-weekly time reports in preparation for payday
Qualifications:
B.A. or B.S. in education or related field
One year minimum previous experience as an MWEP Tutor, preferred
Previous experience managing discipline problems effectively
Ability to function effectively with students who reflect the socioeconomic, multicultural, multiethnic, and multi-linguistic profile of an urban school district
Ability to complete complex tasks with minimal supervision
Superior time management and organizational skills, including effective coordination and prioritization of multiple tasks
Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as superior interpersonal skills
Ability to effectively observe students in a variety of settings and incorporate observations into written and oral reports
Basic knowledge of curriculum standards for grades 5-8
Demonstrated knowledge of academic subjects and applications commensurate with grade level of Wave assignment
Above-average computer skills: MS Office: Excel, Word, and use of both databases and shared networks
Compensation: This job is full time and includes Saturday workdays.
It pays $32,000 per year and includes medical, dental and vision benefits. EOE.
