I am a professionally trained teacher specialized in teaching Mandarin Chinese to English speaking adults and to whom Chinese is their second language.
My qualifications:
--Degree in Second Language Teaching and Education (Taiwan Normal (*teachers) University);
--Ten years of language teaching experience (both Chinese and English);
--Experience in curriculum and textbook development (worked as director of Chinese program at a prestigious international school in Palo Alto);
-- Speak standard Mandarin, good enunciation (good model for beginners)
-- Great understanding of both English and Chinese language structures ;
--Teach both Pinyin and Zhuyin; simplified or traditional characters; knowledge of both Taiwan and China systems;
-- Experienced in teaching business Chinese and internet related materials;
I currently work as a full time Chinese teacher, tutoring professional adults mostly in high tech and financial areas. I just finished one-year Mandarin teaching job at Google-Mountain View (full-time, on-site, over 100 students). And I continue to work with corporations and private students for group and individual lessons. At the same time, I am developing Chinese reading materials and training other Chinese teachers in Mandarin teaching.
TEACHING METHODS:
Beginners: Conversation (speaking and listening) will be the main emphasis of this stage. We will use a textbook and the accompanying CD. We will work on pronunciations (especially tones), vocabulary, and sentence patterns in a very systematic way. After my lessons, you will have very good understanding of Chinese structures, which can not be easily achieved by just listening to CDs on your own or by the help of a tutor who does not have such in-depth knowledge.
I don’t recommend learning reading at this stage, unless you are very passionate about it and willing to put more time in study (in that case, we would start the reading after 10 units). Beginning stage takes about 10-12 months, assuming you have lessons once a week and you can master 20 lessons within 40-50 weeks.
Achievement: In a very short time, you will be able to speak sentences with good pronunciations; and you will be able to tell me things about yourself after 2-3 months. The level of achievement depends a lot on how much time you spend on study and how persistent you are in learning.
Intermediate:
Definition: the student must have basic level of Chinese speaking ability.
During this stage, we will quickly build up huge number of vocabulary- from the textbook and from supplementary materials. Some more complicated sentence structures will be taught. The students are asked to talk about various subjects-about their life, their work, and environments.
Reading (character recognition) starts this stage. I help the student to understand how the Chinese characters are formed and how to make best guess of meaning when you read. Some students are interested in writing characters on their own. I help them with stroke orders and correct the mistakes.
Advanced:
This is for people who are already fluent in speaking Chinese but need help with more sophisticated vocabulary and more advanced reading. The newspaper articles and other supplementary materials (comic books, novels, etc.) will be used.
Locations:
Currently I have 2 locations: one in Mountain View downtown and one in Campbell downtown. Other locations are possible after negotiations.
Rate:
$50/hr. Each class is normally 1.5 hr. Discount may apply for multiple lessons per week.
(corporate and group rates are higher).
If you are interested, please send an email and let me know your level, your needs, frequency of the lesson, the cities where you live and work; your availability.
Thank you.
