Description For Sale: Johnson 15hp outboard motor (Model FD-10, Year 1956). Bronze w/ white wings and face plate. Black (original) tiller handle. Standard shaft length.

History: As a kid, a friend used this during summers on a lake in the Sierra (fresh water, just about as close to distilled water as you can get); he bought it used probably about 1968. It’s probably been on this same lake since it was new. My friend got married, and I bought it from him in about 1974 because our family 10hp seemed about to die – it never did, so I used the 15hp for a summer or two, and it’s been stored out of the weather in reserve ever since. Now 2-cycle motors aren’t allowed in the Tahoe basin, so I can’t use either motor. Virtually all of the use has been 2-mile (10 minute) open throttle planning runs on 12 or 14-ft tin boat, never saw it trolled or worked hard.

Condition - As with all our 2-cycle outboards, per my Johnson dealer/boss’s direction, every season’s end I fogged the motor with 2-cycle oil, added oil to each cylinder and slowly cycled it to coat all surfaces w/ oil and purge the water pump; drained the carb; changed the Champion plugs; changed the lower unit hypoid oil (which was/is clear w/ no water apparent). I have not run the motor since about 1976, but it pulls over as smoothly as ever, with compression evident. It’s always been a “one-pull” motor, even after winter storage. The original owner removed all decals, who knows why, though it doesn’t appear to have been painted. The “15” medallions on the shroud are intact. It’s rust-free. The bracket for the steering gear has had a crack through it since before I got it, but doesn’t appear to matter even w steering gear. No visible oil/gas leaks. The usual complement of tiny bugs stuck to oily surfaces. It was treated as a working motor, so the paint’s worn on the bits that touch the ground when it’s stored, etc. Prop is worn, sorry don’t know what pitch it is.

Why You Need It: It’s collectible; Johnson made this model for only one year. It’s a never-say-die motor, not high-tech, so it’ll last longer than we will, and I understand from a collector that parts are available. I figured I’d restore the decals, etc. etc. Now I have 2 small daughters, too many projects, and too many strollers/Barbie houses etc. If you need a 2-hose tank, I can arrange one after about June when the snows melt in the mountains.

Email me for photos or questions. It’s located in the South Bay, and we can work out meeting anywhere this side of Sacramento – looks like a pain to ship.
