Humane Investigator

Department: Shelter Operations
Reports To: Supervisor, Field Services
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Summary:

Investigates complaints and/or incidences of animal cruelty, prepares reports for District Attorney or any other matters related to situations involving animal cruelty.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Will respond to and manage reporting process of animal cruelty and/or neglect. Prepare quality cruelty reports in a timely manner for the District Attorney's Office.
Impound or assist with impoundment of animals under protective custody as evidence in crimes.
Prepare and execute search warrants and arrest warrants; issues citations and/or notices.
May either prepare or assist in preparation of cases for filing criminal charges with the District Attorney.
Responsible for entering case information into computer as well as written documentation in hard copy of investigation report and maintain daily activity log.
May provide supervisory assistance of department staff.
Provide secondary back up supervision/training of Field Services Staff. Be available on call for emergencies as needed.
May delegate and review all cruelty complaints written by staff, ensuring a quality report.
Coach and counsel employees as needed.
Coordinate the departmentıs involvement in events such as Police Week, Grand National Rodeo, Circus and other events.
Act as a liaison with the courts, cities, and county government and other law enforcement agencies.
Attend department meetings as needed.
Train employees in all aspects of the job of Animal Control/Humane Officer as related to cruelty investigations.
Maintain appropriate training records.
Handle citizen complaints.
Provide humane care for all animals in the Society's care

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Must be able to pass a criminal background check within three (3) months from date of hire.

Education and/or Experience:


Minimum two (2) years of college with an emphasis in Business Management and two (2) years of experience as an Animal Control/State Humane Officer (OR) equivalent combination of education and experience equal to four (4) years as an Animal Control Officer. Completion of courses described in 607(f) of corporation code 14502.

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Chameleon database software or become proficient within the first six months from hire date. Basic knowledge, or become proficient with Microsoft Office and computer keyboarding skills (data entry).

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Certified in Euthanasia and trained in decapitations within six months of employment.
Valid California Drivers License.
