Housing Advocate:
(Foster Aftercare for emancipating or emancipated foster youth)
The housing advocate will be a connector, working in the community to support housing needs for emancipating and emancipated foster youth and youth older than 17 in kinship care. This person will become familiar with the housing options, nonprofits, landlords and developers along the San Francisco Peninsula, Silicon Valley and lower East Bay. Working together with realtors and apartment associations, the advocate will create relationships and encourage landlords to rent to target youth in appropriate neighborhoods. This person will develop or select and coordinate delivery of an appropriate training curriculum for a housing skills program that will help young people learn what needs to be done in order obtain and retain good, affordable housing.
The housing advocate will work one-on-one with the young people in their apartments or living situations to provide hands-on assistance if needed. The advocate will serve as the point person for the landlords in the event of conflict or issues around the youth whom he or she has placed.
FUNCTIONS:
• Advocate for foster youth emancipating or emancipated
• Develop, select or coordinate training curriculum for youth housing
• Work with nonprofits, landlords, developers in the communities regarding housing options for youth.
• Work closely with the aftercare case manager assigned by Youth and Family Enrichment Services, HSA’s (SM County Human Services Agency) various housing as well as adolescent services staff and build a strong
• Consult with Human Services Agency (HSA) Adolescent Services Unit and other appropriate community resources for collaboration opportunities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• B.A.
• Housing related experience
• Aptitude to teach life skills
• Ability to initiate, create, organize and collaborate with other community resources
• Ability to work well with young adults
Position is Full-Time 40 hour week with Medical, Vision, Dental, and Life Insurance. Salary 40k annual.
