We are looking for a Preschool Head Teacher (minimum of 24 ECE units required, including two supervision units). The Head Teacher is responsible for the overall planning and implementation of one of the preschool/toddler/infant programs. This includes the provision of services to ensure health and safety, and to promote growth and development.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist the Childcare Manager in planning and implementing a high quality, developmentally and culturally appropriate curriculum to meet the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional needs of the children;
Maintain a safe and effective facility operation; develop and update plans to assure the safety of the children, both indoors and outdoors;
Ensure that proper caregiver/child ratios are maintained;
Ensure that teachers and other caregivers interact in an age appropriate manner with the children;
Ensure that teachers plan and implement age appropriate curriculum and activities;
Establish and promote productive relationships with parents/guardians in keeping with the program goals and objectives;
Participate in assisting with daily hygiene of children as needed;
Coordinate services with providers of other Glide program areas to enhance service delivery to childcare program participants;
Comply with requirements of the California Community Care Licensing Department of Social Services;
Maintain compliance with licensing regulations, Head Start, the California Department of Education and the Child Care Food program;
Assist the Childcare Manager in preparing required documentation and meeting reporting requirements;
Assist the children with meals in keeping with the requirements of the Childcare Program;
Manage the Childcare (preschool/toddler/infant) room.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide direct supervision for the preschool teaching staff, volunteers and interns;
Perform supervisory responsibilities such as coaching and mentoring staff (providing positive reinforcement), plan, assign and direct work; provide performance feedback throughout the year, and assist the Childcare Manager with writing and delivering annual performance reviews;
Work with staff to address complaints and resolve problems in accordance with Glide’s policies and procedures and in collaboration with the Childcare Manager and Human Resources.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) and a minimum of 24 ECE units required, including two supervision units. AA or BA degree in Early Child Education or related field preferred;
At least one year of experience teaching targeted age group and one year experience supervising adults preferred;
Experience in planning and implementing childcare programs desired. Strong curriculum development experience needed.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Teacher’s permit or higher level of certification required;
Must pass Tuberculosis and Dept. of Justice Fingerprint screening;
Must have or complete CPR and First Aid Training within the first 30 days of employment.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
Proficiency in a second language strongly desired;
Excellent verbal communication skills are required to interact with staff, parents and children;
Strong written communication skills (proficiency in grammar, spelling and writing) are necessary to develop lesson plans, and appropriate documentation and reports.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
Strong leadership and supervisory skills;
Has the ability to teach others. Able to develop curriculum/lesson plans;
Knowledge of Learning Strategies. Knows how to use multiple approaches when learning or teaching new things;
Knowledge of licensing requirements;
Enjoy interacting with children; able to relate to them in age-appropriate terms;
Working knowledge of childhood disease and symptoms;
Excellent organization and planning abilities. Ability to prioritize work and the ability to multi-task within specific timelines. Works well under pressure in a demanding and fast paced multi-cultural environment;
Able to work independently and in a team setting. Knows when to consult and seek assistance;
Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Exercises sound judgment in interactions with others;
Ability to reason and consistently interact in a professional, patient and sensitive manner with a culturally, economically and racially diverse client population and staff population;
Ability to work with a complex and demanding multi-cultural environment in the San Francisco and Tenderloin areas, including sensitivity to homeless, substance abuse, domestic violence and mental health issues;
