THE FOLLOWING IS A LIST OF GENERAL SKILLS REQUIRED:
General maintenance Skills/Tasks:
Plumbing: Drainage clogs occur regularly as well as occasional leaks and faulty faucets. Also Kitchen washer drain clean-out cap should be removed every few months and hot water from the hose blasted down the drain to clear grease build-up.
Skills required:
Good snaking experience
Ability to solder copper pipe
Ability to dismantle and replace drainage pipes for bar sinks
Ability to trouble-shoot/replace faucets and o-rings
Mechanical: There is a lot of expensive equipment here that suffers occasional breakage and malfunction and specialist fees are very high, so experience with repairing equipment of any kind and a willingness to try to fix something new or unfamiliar is very useful.
Examples:
Clogged Soda Gun valves (located under bar at end of gun tube).
The industrial, integrated front door latch not opening preventing the restaurant from opening, not latching prevents lock-up and folks can’t go home.
The blower fan on the roof needs tensioning or a new belt occasionally.
The shelf brackets inside one of the many refrigerators may fall out and go missing.
Screws come loose and things stop working for the simplest of reasons at times.
Carpentry/Drywall: Things break and get damaged and often need to be fixed the same day, walls get holes knocked in them and fixtures get torn out or need to be installed.
Skills required:
Experience with affixing things to dry-wall without studs
Ability to get, cut, sand, screw and glue wood
Experience with patching drywall/sheetrock
Painting: Things often need to be re-painted or touched up as they get dirty and scratched or replaced.
Skills required:
Good experience with painting, touch-up (feathering)
Experience prepping surfaces (sanding, priming, taping, etc.)
Electrical: Very basic electrical wiring skills for fixing/installing lights, switches, etc.
Skills required:
Experience and comfort opening electrical boxes, installing wire/conduit, and tracking circuits to their breaker
Volt-meter usage for testing power-supplies and outlets to save time and expensive parts
Computer: There is a huge amount of sensitive computer equipment which often has to be moved, cleaned or worked around, and when not working properly just needs to be reset and passwords entered or plugs checked and tightened.
Skills required:
Experience with basic computer equipment, printers, etc.
Comfortable enough to disconnect, remove and re-connect equipment, re-run wires, clean out cooling fans, etc.
Sound/lighting: There is a lot of sound and lighting equipment, wireless microphones etc. that often stop working for the simplest reasons, like a loose wire, small component not turned on, dead battery, bulb blown, breaker switch not on, etc.
Skills required:
Experience around DJ equipment
Intuition and trial and error skill sets.
Persistence is often the most useful ability on this job. Things can get very frustrating when you can’t figure out why they don’t work! But knowing when you’re beat or out of your league can save you time, agony and money too.
**Timing and being on-call and able to come in in emergencies is very important as people often don’t find out things are wrong until just before opening!
