He saw her standing unknowingly in her own body on the platform, and he thought about all it took just to hold her upright. All the weight of her liquid mind and the timbers of her torso shafting down her spine and into the webbed pocket of her pubis like a gyroscope splaying out the orbital of all the other proportions of her- the set of her hips, the drag on her collar bones, how much or how little the veins near her hands would swell with the strap of a handbag cutting into her shoulder, even the tightness of her skin- the whole system rocking smoothly on slick, silent, healthy joints, firing her form directly into the ground like a plant bolted into reality. her skin swam over muscle and bone, the moisture locked away inside the tissue, her organs suspended in the mesoderm folds of herself which would also move with her perfectly, doing their own feminine rocking and switching with each step.
Grace, utility, the perfection of her- the weight of so much refinement frozen in the act of standing struck him, but not penetratingly. Somehow it panicked him slightly that he could intuit so much of the woman's body that was not showing and not feel much about it. Not awe, not arousal, not even self satisfaction at guessing well at her proportions. Instead he felt a separateness- that she was on the other side of some membranous fiber, alive in side her unwittingly rarefied bodice, and he was totally severed from her.
Thoughts of all the ways he would touch her and make her laugh paled at the thought of the dormant agencies inside her. The magnitude of meetings, the helplessness of wanting to reach across this divide, push through to spring with a finger and glance against the invisible golden hairs of her jaw. With each of these thoughts he swelled and contracted again, like ice suddenly growing fissures in itself in a glass of water by a hotel bedside.
he looked away at some invented curiosity and tried to imagine that it could be simple.
