A goatee is the hair on the chinny-chin-chin with the portion above the lip
is clean shaven.
With the growth around the lip and down to the chin is therefore known as
a van dyke based upon the appearance of the Flemish baroque painter Sir
Anthony Van Dyck.
Just as sideburns are named for Civil War Union General Ambrose Burnside.
Drives me nuts when I hear a vandyke referred to as a goatee!
