Gateway to Fitness Program Leader
Program Background:
Community Bridges Beacon (CBB) is a community center dedicated to providing resources and programs for the healthy development of youth and their families in a safe and supportive environment. CBB offers youth programs in the following areas: Arts and Technology, Leadership and Civic Engagement, Sports and Recreation, Academic Mentoring and Career Development, and Wellness and Personal Development. Community Bridges Beacon, located at Everett Middle School in the Mission District of San Francisco, is part of the San Francisco Beacon Initiative and is one of eight Beacon Centers city-wide. Position Description:
Community Bridges Beacon is pleased to announce our Gateway to Fitness Program Leader position. Gateway to Fitness is a 9 week healthy eating-active living program. The program will be offered as a Dream School enrichment collaboration with Everett Middle School and as an after school program including referred “at risk for obesity” youth from Kaiser and existing Everett Middle School youth. The program is intended to offer youth a menu of fun, traditional and non-traditional physical activities and nutrition education as a ‘gateway’ to their continued participation in these activities.
Responsibilities:
· Design a 9 week healthy eating-active living program for youth
· Conduct a Community Input Process with participants and their parents to determine program design
· Conduct physical activity lessons 3 x week for 45 minutes each session
· Educate participants on health and fitness concepts and expose participants to a variety of sports and physical activities
· Conduct culturally appropriate nutrition education and cooking activity 1 x week
· Create a binder of recipes and nutrition curriculum
· Coordinate and implement two parent involvement events, including parent orientation/kick off event and parent workshop on healthy eating
· Oversee the daily logistics of program delivery, including coordinating with Everett Middle School staff to develop and implement engaging strategies to successfully transition youth into after school activities
· Ensure sound processes related to space utilization and the safety of participants at all times
· Ensure minimum youth enrollment requirements in the after-school program
· Complete program evaluation including pre and post testing
Required Minimum Qualifications:
· Strong understanding of and commitment to the principles and practices of youth development
· Experience leading quality youth development programs for middle and/or high school age youth within the areas of sports, recreation, and nutrition education
· Working knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Word and Excel
· Strong skills in relationship building; ability to positively motivate and engage other team members
· Ability to solve conflicts in an appropriate and timely manner
· Proven ability to successfully outreach to a diverse youth population and recruit for participation in youth programs
· Strong verbal and written communication skills
· Strong time management and organizational skills with the ability to multi-task
· Ability to maintain effectiveness in a challenging and fast-paced environment
Desired Qualifications:
· Experience coordinating youth development programs
· Experience working in San Francisco’s Mission District
· Experience working within schools
· Spanish language fluency
Schedule
This is a temporary position beginning April 3 through June 9
Hours range between 3-6 pm with some evening hours.
Compensation
$20/hour. 10 hours a week x 9 weeks
