I was into Photoshop and graphics tools in the beginning but that niche is very impacted. On a tip that a friend of a friend had a contract with Lucasfilm, I called daily for a month before my call was taken. Over lunch I was disappointed to learn that he did nothing for film. He was building a database for Skywalker Ranch that functioned more or less as a hotel. I was told that a consultant is someone you hire to look things up in the manual for you. I was handed the manual and told to answer the phone and solve peoples problems. I imagine I averaged minimum wage that first year of late nights before I amounted the skill to break even. That was in 1996 when FileMaker first became relational. Two years later I had a skill that was hard to find and highly valued.
There is always a way. It may not be cost effective, but until you have banged it out on the anvil of experiment you don't know. The difference between me and other IT guys is that you won't hear "It can't be done" because I don't know how to do it. If I am puzzled and you want it done, I well damned will figure it out.

OBJECTIVE:
I am seeking clients who require custom database solutions to meet difficult information management needs. I like to work with clients who demand innovation. I am primarily a contractor but have been thinking about the value of a tenure in corporate America and would accept a position with a lower pay rate under the right circumstances.
EXPERIENCE:
11/1996 - Present Prodigious Solutions, Santa Cruz, CA Database Developer
I meet with prospective clients to evaluate their needs and then write a formal proposal to fill their needs. Upon approval, I build and deliver the first module. Further development usually evolves with client feedback. My rates were $150/$120/$100 an hour respectfully for my corporate/academic/nonprofit clients. I have built extensive solutions for SC County Department of Education, UCSC's Preventative Maintenance and Project Management departments, Seagate Technologies' Land Management, Women's Crisis Center, Aptos/La Selva Fire Department and many others.
4/1994 - 11/1996 Cerne Systems, Scotts Valley, CA Database Developer
Here I began my database development work, very much as above. My initial clients included Lucasfilm Ltd. and Eselan.
1/1988 - 6/1993 Champion Construction Fremont, CA Engineer/Draftsman/Carpenter
This is where I learned to meet a client's needs with a quality solution. I specialized in high end custom residential remodeling including bidding, design, drafting, city permitting and crew management through all phases of construction to final inspection. This discontinued on June 19, 1993 when I received a spinal cord injury, preventing me from working again until April the next year.
EDUCATION:
I recently completed my bachelor's in computer science at University of California Santa Cruz. Initially a business major, I have also taken courses in accounting, macro and micro-economics, labor management and marketing. I have received the Presidential Academic Citation twice.
