Under the direct supervision of the Facilities Supervisor/Director of Operations, this position works as part of a team in performing maintenance, laundry, and janitorial duties for the Society.

This position requires maximum flexibility to meet the wide variety of maintenance needs of the Society. This position may require extra hours, an occasional change between day and evening shifts, working holidays and weekends.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

This position is responsible for day and weekend coverage of maintenance tasks and works as part of a team to keep all Society property clean and in good working order.

This position may serve as backup for the Facilities Supervisor. The incumbent is responsible to note and report any item to the Supervisor or Director that cannot immediately be addressed.

Performs with minimal supervision facilities maintenance tasks including, but not limited to, painting, carpentry, plumbing, and general repairs. Participates in cross-training events and assists in training Facilities Technicians and others in maintenance processes and safety.

Responsible for performing maintenance projects including, but not limited to, filter changes, carpentry repairs, painting, minor electric repairs, and minor equipment repairs.

Responsibilities include all aspects of cleaning the facility including, but not limited to cleaning all interior spaces using appropriate tools and products, performing floor maintenance (sweep, mop, strip, wax, and buff hard surface floors and vacuum and shampoo carpeted floors, removing debris and animal waste from exterior grounds, hosing and sweeping exterior hardscapes.

May be required to pick up donations, drive Society vehicles to the shop for repairs and maintenance, and receiving shipments and deliveries from vendors

Follows established procedures governing safe work practices including, but not limited to, wearing protective clothing and/or equipment when necessary. Must attend all designated safety training sessions and read all safety literature handouts.

Performs duties in a manner, which encourages attainment of goals, contributions, and business for the Society and its programs.

Provides laundry services for the Society including pickup, processing, and delivering laundry to departments throughout the facility.

Performs regular cleaning projects that are beyond the scope of daily activities to ensure that the entire facility is cleaned on a regular basis and assists with departmental moves as needed.

Treats people and animals with respect, contributes to effective teamwork, promotes intra and inter departmental cooperation, and fosters public relations beneficial to the Society and its programs.

Performs other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to lift and move objects and animals weighting up to 50 pounds for short distances and to humanely restrain an animal when necessary.

Allergic conditions, which would be aggravated when handling or working with animals, may be a disqualification for the position.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be able to read and write and have the ability to comprehend and follow instructions.

EXPERIENCE, ABILITIES, AND QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Should have affection for animals, concern for their welfare, and a willingness to accommodate animals in the workplace.

Two years verifiable maintenance experience including plumbing, electrical, and carpentry is required. Janitorial experience including floor maintenance is preferred. Must demonstrate the ability to learn new and additional necessary skills. Should have the ability to accommodate varied work assignments and schedules.

Must have experience in safe use of power tools, hand tools, and motorized equipment. Fork-lift certification preferred.

Ability to communicate skillfully and effectively with a culturally diverse staff, volunteers, and community in a professional, pleasant, respectful, courteous, and tactful manner at all times. Should possess maturity, good judgment, and maintain a professional personal appearance including the wearing of neat and clean uniforms.

HOURS:

NON-EXEMPT POSITION: Daily reporting hours and days of the week may vary according to the needs of the Division. Work hours may include weekends, holidays, and overtime.

INTRODUCTORY ASSESSMENT PERIOD:

The Society’s introductory assessment period for all new employees is the first 180 days (six months) of continuous employment after your anniversary date. Your anniversary date is the first day of the month following your actual date of hire. The assessment period is a trial period during which you and the Society have an opportunity to assess your ability to perform your job duties satisfactorily and to adapt successfully to the work situation and environment. Successful completion of the assessment period does not change the at-will nature of your employment relationship with the Society.

There is no minimum period of employment guaranteed or implied by acceptance of an employment offer. It is the policy of the Society that employment for this position is “AT WILL”, which means that employment is for no specified term and that employment may be terminated by the employee or the Society at any time without cause.
