director of product design
The Director of Product Design (PD) will be responsible for managing mechanical development, managing all product designers and coordinating the efforts of the PD group with the rest of the company. The PD director will report to the Vice President of Engineering.
responsibilities:
Manage and grow a team of product designers developing multiple computing devices and accessories
Provide extensive and ongoing support to contract manufacturing partner and custom component supply base
Departmental planning of people and budgets
Define and drive meta-engineer design aspects such as weight-budgets, tooling programs, manufacturability, quality, schedule, cost, and regulatory requirements
Participate as a technical contributor to help resolve hard problems as they arise
Oversee formal production releases and revision control throughout the product lifecycle
Work with engineering program managers to keep PD schedules synchronized with overall product schedules
Provide support to manufacturing test development
Ensure that PD release documentation includes all necessary morphological, cosmetic, and functional specifications
Shepherd design from concept to stable high yield manufacturing, meeting stringent acceptance criteria
Represent PD in strategic vendor relationships and within OQO
Requirements:
6 years product design experience
4 years managing product design teams of at least 5 engineers, developing successful high volume end-user products
Experience in project planning, managing and directing others, and meeting deadlines under budget
Experience overseeing overseas suppliers, including tier 1 contract manufacturers
Versed in PD development cycles, phase-review process, and the resolution of real world development challenges
Experience with formal revisions control and release software (Agile, Arena, CVS, etc.)
Committed to integrating DFM and DFT into all stages of PD design
Facility with both NPI and ongoing product upgrades.
Direct experience or knowledge in laptops, PDAs, digital cameras, media players, or smartphones strongly preferred.
