The UCSF Diabetes Center is a comprehensive research, treatment and teaching facility offering cutting edge and innovative clinical treatment that improves the quality of life to patients suffering from both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION

The Director of Development is responsible for a comprehensive range of development functions focusing on the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of individual prospects and donors, corporations and foundations, with emphasis on those with a gift potential of $50,000 or more. 

The Director is responsible for coordinating and advancing the development agendas for the Center with departmental chairs, division chiefs, and other academic and volunteer leaders as appropriate. In addition, the Director will work with other Development Officers and resource specialists in the Development Office to ensure coordination of all fund raising, including prospect solicitation, special events, recognition activities, planned giving activities, direct mail, etc.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

* 15%:  Implement and manage a comprehensive fund raising program in support of priorities associated with the Diabetes Center.
* 20%: Serve as the chief fundraiser for the Center, focusing on the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of individual prospects and donors (with emphasis on gift potential of $50,000 and above), corporations, and foundations. 
* 5%: Be responsible for advancing the development agendas of the Center, working collaboratively with the Director and its faculty members, the Dean of the School of Medicine, and other academic and volunteer leaders as appropriate. 
* 5%: Work closely with other units in the Development Office to ensure coordination of all fundraising efforts for the Diabetes Center throughout UCSF; including Planned Giving, Corporations and Foundation relations, and Annual Appeals.
* 5%: Assess and advise on fundraising goals through meetings with the Center's Director and appropriate faculty and staff. Become familiar with the Center's wide-ranging academic programs.
* 20%: Develop major gift prospects. Bring the resources of the Development Office (prospect research, planned giving, direct mail, UCSF Foundation volunteers) to bear as appropriate, and work with faculty and department volunteers to identify and develop prospects. Work with the Diabetes Center's clinical faculty and staff to identify "grateful patient" prospects. Work with the Diabetes Center's Leadership Council to identify diabetes activists who have the potential to fund UCSF programs and who will act as spokespeople for the Diabetes Center. Actively prospect at all Diabetes Center patient and community functions. Organize and staff fundraising events to raise awareness, identify prospects, and generate dollars. Staff Diabetes Center Director and other faculty on calls to donors and prospects. Host campus visitors to the Diabetes Center
* 20%: Design and implement solicitation strategies for prospective donors. Implement strategies so that the cultivation stage moves forward and the solicitation is successful (i.e., the prospect is asked for the right amount of financial support at the right time by the right person). Steps may include, but are not limited to:
Introductory letters, prospectuses and proposals
Face-to-face meetings
Special projects, events
Monitor the stewardship phase of the development process to prepare for successful future solicitations through use of, but not limited to:
Written materials 
Recognition events
Updates on the progress of individual programs 
Appropriate acknowledgments of gifts
* 5%: Work in collaboration with other members of the UCSF development staff to ensure that institutional development goals are achieved, and to advocate for the fund raising needs of the Center and its donors. 
* 5%: Maintain appropriate communications with supervisor and key academic leaders: discuss such items as activity and contact reports, prospect management and tracking lists, and any other matters pertaining to development, including strategies for solicitations. Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

* At least five years of development experience.
* Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
* Experience developing and growing a comprehensive fundraising program.
* Ability to work within exact time frames with little supervision.
* Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty and staff.
* Willingness to work nights and weekends and to travel periodically.
* Bachelor's degree.
