Description Background:
The UCSF Stroke Sciences Group is under the direction of S. Claiborne Johnston, M.D., PhD, and is an arm of the Neurovascular Service in the Department of Neurology. The group performs epidemiological analyses and clinical research with patients who have a diagnosis of stroke, TIA and other neurovascular diseases. The team includes neurologists, epidemiologists, neurovascular fellows, medical student researchers, clinical research nurses, research coordinators and administrative staff.

Job Description:
Under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI), and in concert with a collaborative research center, the DS will provide data management and programming support for an international, multi-center clinical trial as part of a team responsible for coordinating the scientific design and direction, data collection and management, and quality control components of a complex study of stroke and TIA. The incumbent will coordinate multiple large, interdependent datasets and be responsible for the development, maintenance, and documentation of these datasets. S/he will write and edit data verification programs and prepare detailed documentation. S/he will also perform statistical procedures to summarize data and generate reports for publications, posters and peer-reviewed journals. The incumbent will carry out statistical analyses in cooperation with a senior statistician. The DS will be responsible for determining priorities for the work involved, in conjunction with the project director and PI.

Qualification Requirements:
This role requires proven ability and detailed knowledge of database management, structured programming in SAS and also preferably in Microsoft SQL and Microsoft Access (database package) or other similar database packages, including proven skills in maintaining, updating, and manipulating large on-line computerized databases.
An advanced health-related degree (PhD, MS or MPH) is also required, preferably in Biostatistics. The incumbent must possess excellent written and oral communication skills, and must be able to work independently and prioritize work effectively and accurately.
