PURPOSE OF POSITION: To manage a comprehensive communications program, including media relations, marketing strategies, donor publications, and public relations.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1) Develop an annual communications plan, based on overall organizational and specific department goals.
2) Manage public relations activities, and advertising campaigns including writing press releases, pitching media stories and electronic publishing. Contribute to the development of public education and awareness events, advising and coordinating with advocacy and education activities and the special events team.
3) Establish and maintain relationships with the media, including newspapers, radio and television stations, as well as specialty magazines and trade papers.
4) Ensure the San Francisco Food Bank message and image evolve appropriately and are used consistently and effectively, both internally and externally.
5) Edit and oversee the production of the publications and collateral materials, including newsletters to supporters; annual reports; brochures; flyers and event-related advertising; truck signage; and other materials, as needed.
6) Manage the San Francisco Food Bank’s Web site, utilizing it effectively to support organizational and departmental goals.
7) Develop a speakers' program, preparing and placing the Executive Director and other speakers at meetings of civic groups, conferences, association meetings and other settings. Outline speeches for Executive Director and other staff. Develop staff skills for presenting and speaking on behalf of the Food Bank.
8) Evaluate and coordinate strategies with the communications departments at other food banks, and America’s Second Harvest-The Nation’s Food Bank Network.
9) Recruit and manage paid and pro bono teams from advertising firms, public relations firms, Web site developers and related professions, including members of the Board of Directors.
10) Manage, update and solicit photos for the photo archive as needed.
11) Maintain electronic and paper files as well as project reports and analysis.
QUALIFICATIONS
1) B.A. in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or related field.
2) A minimum of four years of professional experience in communications.
3) Excel at project management.
4) Excellent writing and presentation skills.
5) Experience with publishing electronic media.
6) Ability to work effectively in a team setting and to provide leadership on communications issues.
7) Ability to work under deadline and adapt easily.
8) Ability to think creatively and be a problem solver.
9) Ability to work and interact well with individuals (staff, volunteers, and clients) from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds in a culturally diverse environment.
10) Efficient using Microsoft Office Software including Front Page, Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
11) Valid driver's license required and access to vehicle preferred.
