M.S., Chemistry, University of California, Berkeley, 12/04. Research Adviser: T. Don Tilley

B.S., Chemistry, Yale University, New Haven, CT, 5/00. GPA: 3.6/4.0

EXPERIENCE:
Redefining Progress – Oakland, CA
Consultant to Sustainability Indicators Program, 1/06-present; Intern, 10/04-12/04.
--Performed global- and national-scale quantitative sustainability analyses using Ecological Footprint Analyses (EFA).
--Wrote macros in Visual Basic to streamline the generation EFA time series and comparisons of large numbers of countries.
--Generated times series data (1965-2001) for 160 countries for release on the RP’s forthcoming Footprint 2.0 website.
--Combed the EFA methodology (as implemented in Excel) and suggested improvements.

Sun Light & Power – Berkeley, CA
Biodiesel Maker, Warehouse Manager, and PV Installer 2, 12/04-present.
--Produced biodiesel for company vehicles from waste vegetable oil collected from local restaurants.
--Coordinated with local and state agencies to ensure that biodiesel production was conducted in a safe and environmentally friendly manner.
--Established and maintained oil collection relationships with local businesses.
--Operated, repaired, and modified biodiesel production equipment.
--Obtained building permits and attended inspections.
--Managed company warehouse, keeping it organized and stocked with various materials commonly used for PV, solar hot water, and radiant heating projects.
--Constructed rooftop photovoltaic arrays, solar hot water systems, and radiant heating installations.

The Princeton Review – Berkeley, CA
Organic Chemistry Instructor, 10/04-8/05.
--Led organic chemistry classes of up to 25 students.

University of California – Berkeley, CA
Graduate Student Researcher and Instructor, 9/01-12/04.
-Research Experience:
--Conducted original research in organometallic chemistry. Synthesized, characterized, and studied the reactivity of new and often highly unstable organoscandium complexes. Designed and synthesized new ligands for early transition metals.
--Mastered techniques for the manipulation of highly air and water sensitive compounds, including glove box and Schlenk-line techniques. Purified organic and inorganic compounds by standard methods including crystallization, chromatography, sublimation, and distillation.
--Characterized organic and organometallic compounds by NMR, IR, and UV/Vis spectroscopies, GC/MS, and melt point.
--Performed X-ray crystallographic analyses of single crystals.
--Authored, edited, and reviewed scientific papers.
-Teaching Experience:
--Three semesters supervising undergraduate teaching laboratories of up to 25 students.
--One semester assistant teaching graduate level courses (wrote and graded exams, quizzes and problem sets, held office hours.)
--Trained junior graduate students in Schlenk-line technique and instrumental analysis.

Abbott Laboratories – North Chicago, IL
QA Laboratory Technician, 10/00-8/01.
--Analyzed pre-release and stability drug samples in cGMP, FDA regulated laboratory.
--Performed dissolution assays, purity tests, Karl-Fischer titrations, and LODs.
--Prepared reagents and standard solutions in accordance with SOPs.

Pfizer Central Research – Groton, CT
Summer Intern/Student, Summers 1997-2000.
--Developed high throughput RP-HPLC based methods for the determination of lipophilicity (LogPoct and LogD-oct) of drug compounds. These methods have been patented and published and are now routinely used at Pfizer and other major pharmaceutical companies.
--Measured LogPoct and LogDoct of drug compounds by classical, shake-flask methods.
--Determined the solubility of drug molecules using HPLC quantitation techniques.
--Responsibilities also included HPLC method development and data analysis.

Yale University– New Haven, CT
-Undergraduate Researcher in the Hartwig Lab, Chemistry Dept., 1/99-5/00.
--Following published procedures, synthesized highly air and water sensitive organometallic compounds using dry box and Schlenk line techniques.
--Characterized compounds by IR and NMR spectroscopies and by GS/MS.
-Work Study in the Lasaga Lab, Geology Dept., 8/97-5/98.
--Duties included preparation of standard solutions and the spectrophotometric determination of aqueous Si and Al concentrations.
-Work Study in the Flavell Lab, Medical School, 9/96-5/97.
--Responsible for maintaining a large colony of transgenic tiger fish. Duties included preparation of standard solutions, setting brine shrimp cultures, fish feeding, and water testing.
