Why do people stay together for the kids? Because it is better than breaking up where the kids are concerned most of the time. Only in extreme cases is breaking up better for the kids.
Your issue as a single person, who thinks of yourself first, is that you don't understand that after married people have children, the responsibility to the kids takes precedence over whatever whim suits your fancy. It is about responsibility to something more important that yourself, and that is your kids.

Why do people stay together "for the kids"? I really don't understand this logic. I have this going on in my family and it's really awful. If two people are that miserable, why doesn't one of them leave? One of them even had an affair and the other found out about it and yet neither of them will end this sham of a marriage. I'm not married so maybe I don't get it but I have had long term relationships, they have gone bad or I've been cheated on and I end it! Life is too short to be in an unhealthy relationship.
