DESCRIPTION: This position is double-posted at the 4P2 and 4P3 levels. Applications Software Developer for Stanford University Library?s HighWire Press Program. An Applications Software Developer position is available to develop and manage scholarly journals and/or supporting applications which are published online as part of the program. The goals of the program are to: foster research and instruction by providing a more direct linkage between the writers and readers of scholarly materials; use innovative network tools for capture, publishing, retrieval, reading and presentation; affect the economics of provision of scholarly information to researchers, especially science and technology materials; build new technological, economic and programmatic partnerships with others investigating related problems. RESPONSIBILITIES: Make use of Perl, HTML, SQL, XML, CGI, and other technologies to program (develop) and manage online journals and their supporting systems (including content and information pages, journal searching, linkage to other journals, customer maintenance applications, etc.) This may include supporting additional functionality provided at HighWire Press such as the development of Continuing Medical Education, and additional services for all journals. Contribute to both new development initiatives and streamlining efforts, which may include user interface design issues. Monitor significant functionality for information delivery and interactivity, responding to issues in a timely manner. Continually assess new technologies, especially those relating to WWW. Communicate orally and in writing analysis of design issues, alternatives, conclusions, and decisions. Communicate frequently with team members about progress, schedules, and availability of test versions. Incorporate team feedback into next steps. Identify and provide needed project documentation. Work as a member of a team to support the 24x7 production use of the journal system. Assist in the training of customers on the use of the journal system. Perform special projects on assignment. Responsibilities at 4P3 level: participation in large and/or complex projects; provide guidance for other staff as needed. QUALIFICATIONS: The Developer must have a technical computing background in computer systems, workstation/server systems (Unix) and networking systems and experience with multi-vendor, multi-user, inter-networked computing environments. Experience should include success with both technical implementations and usability by end-users. The following specific experience is required: usability testing and analysis of results; experience developing software on PC, Macintosh and Unix platforms using Perl or other scripting and programming languages; experience developing information resources on the World Wide Web using HTML, including experience with web forms, CGI scripting and inputting; experience in relational database systems using Sybase or other SQL database environments; experience with accessing databases utilizing HTML data; ability to deal with a largely non-technical clientele and to communicate effectively with people of computer knowledge levels from novice users to professionals; demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills; sensitivity to and ability to work effectively with individuals and groups of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds; ability to set priorities; flexibility and ability to handle multiple assignments and work with minimal supervision under tight deadlines and in pressure situations; a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in computer science. The following experience is desired but not required: experience with publishing online scholarly journals; knowledge and experience with GUI design concepts.
