Class begins Saturday, May 6th. Two day workshop meets Saturday and Sunday, 9:30am to 4:30pm. Tuition: $175. Members may take a $25 discount on one workshop per year.

Are you interested in exploring ivory, but the endangered species act got in the way? The tagua nut or vegetable ivory we will explore in this workshop is grown and harvested from northern South America's Phytelephas Macrocarpa palm trees. As a renewable source of ivory, the harvesting of tagua nuts creates jobs and helps to save rain forests! This intensive workshop will focus on whole tagua nuts (golf ball size and smaller) and thin slices. We will be removing ivory with files, flex shaft and burs, drill bits and jeweler's saw blades. As an added bonus, if you enjoy color, the ivory can be dyed any color you can think of! Come prepared to explore miniature ivory, working through the options of creating beads, finger rings, earring parts or jewelry scale elements to enhance your metalwork. For intermediate to advanced students. Materials fee.

DAVID LaPLANTZ, MFA, Cranbrook Academy of Art, is a full time studio artist working simultaneously on wearable jewelry using tagua nuts and beads versus full size, social commentary, mixed media art microphones. LaPlantz retired from Northern California's Humboldt State University in 2002, following a 35-year teaching career. He is the author of Artists Anodizing Aluminum, The Sulfuric Acid Process and is included in The 1000 Rings Book and 500 Brooches Book, published by Lark Books.
